Biography & Historical Record
Hua Rong (花荣, Hoa Vinh) is a fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. Known by the nickname ‘Little Li Guang’ (an allusion to the legendary Han dynasty general Li Guang (李广, Lý Quảng), famed for his unmatched archery skills), Hua Rong is portrayed as a peerless archer and a valiant warrior. Originally serving as the military commandant of Qingfeng Fort, he is a loyal brother-in-arms to Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang). His integrity, combined with his supernatural accuracy with the bow, makes him one of the most celebrated members of the 108 Liangshan heroes.
Role in Water Margin
“With a single arrow he severs the goose’s head; his spear dance creates a wall of silver light that no blade can penetrate.” — Traditional description of Hua Rong’s martial prowess.
Hua Rong’s entry into Liangshan is triggered by his rescue of Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) from Qingfeng Fort, leading to his eventual defection due to corrupt officials. Throughout the novel, he serves as one of the Eight Tiger Cub Vanguard Generals. He is instrumental in numerous victories, most notably during the campaign against the Liao dynasty and the suppression of the rebel forces of Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp). His loyalty to Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) remains absolute until the very end, culminating in his tragic suicide upon learning of Song Jiang’s death, choosing to be buried beside his leader.
