Biography & Historical Record
Zhang Heng (张横, Trương Hoành), nicknamed the ‘Boat Fireling’ (Thuyền Hỏa Nhi), is a fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. He is the 28th of the 108 Stars of Destiny and is associated with the Heavenly Balance Star (Tiānpíng Xīng). A native of Puzhou, he earns his living as a river pirate on the Xunyang River, where he often threatens travelers to pay for his services or face death. He is the elder brother of Zhang Shun (张顺, Trương Thuận), who is known as the ‘White Streak in the Waves’. Unlike his younger brother, who is a virtuous warrior, Zhang Heng initially portrays a more reckless and violent temperament, though he eventually reforms under the influence of Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Zhang Heng does not appear in the historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms, as he belongs to the literary universe of the Northern Song Dynasty, his archetype represents the ‘Water Bandit’ figure common in Chinese folklore. His loyalty to the Liangshan cause and his sacrifice during the final campaign against the rebel Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp) elevate him from a petty criminal to a tragic hero of the 108 Heroes.
