Biography & Historical Record
Kong Liang (孔亮, Khổng Lượng) is a fictional character featured in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. He is the younger brother of Kong Ming (孔明, Khổng Minh). Together, they are known as the two masters of the Kong family manor on Mount Baihu. Kong Liang is a hot-tempered warrior who, alongside his brother, becomes a sworn brother to Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) after the latter saves them from a beating. After fleeing their home due to a conflict with local authorities, the brothers join the outlaws at Mount Erlong before eventually integrating into the main force at Liangshan Marsh. He is designated as the 62nd leader among the 108 Stars of Destiny, holding the position of Earth Fiend Star (地煞星, Dìshà Xīng).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Kong Liang does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his character archetype mirrors that of the impulsive yet loyal subordinates often found in historical military novels. His narrative role is defined by his deep loyalty to the Liangshan cause and his sacrifice during the final, tragic military campaign of the 108 heroes.
