Biography & Historical Record
Fan Chou (樊稠, Phàn Trù) was a prominent military commander under the warlord Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác) and later a key general under Li Jue (李傕, Lý Thôi). Originally from Jinyang, he rose through the ranks of the Xiliang army. Following the assassination of Dong Zhuo in 192 AD, Fan Chou joined forces with Li Jue, Guo Si (郭汜, Quách Dĩ), and Zhang Ji (張濟, Trương Tế) to march on Chang’an, successfully capturing the capital and seizing control of the Han Emperor Xian (劉協, Lưu Hiệp).
Fan Chou was noted for his tactical prowess, particularly in the suppression of Ma Teng (馬騰, Mã Đằng) and Han Sui (韓遂, Hàn Toại), who had attempted to attack Li Jue’s forces. During a standoff, Fan Chou pursued Han Sui into the mountains; instead of finishing him off, they conversed, with Han Sui convincing Fan Chou to turn back. Upon returning, Li Jue’s nephew, Li Li (李利, Lý Lợi), accused Fan Chou of colluding with the enemy. In 195 AD, Li Jue invited Fan Chou to a private feast and had him executed, ending his career.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
“Fan Chou was a fierce warrior of the Xiliang faction, whose military might allowed him to secure the capital for his masters, yet his mercy toward a rival ultimately led to his demise at the hands of a suspicious superior.”
In the novel, Fan Chou is depicted as a ruthless and formidable general who plays a significant role in the chaotic power struggle following Dong Zhuo’s death. His portrayal emphasizes the volatile nature of the Xiliang warlords, where trust was non-existent and internal infighting was common. His interaction with Han Sui is highlighted as a moment of misplaced chivalry that cost him his life.
