Biography & Historical Record
Fan Fang (范方, Phạm Phương) was a military officer serving under the warlord Gongsun Yuan (公孙渊, Công Tôn Uyên) in the Liaodong region during the late Han dynasty and the early Three Kingdoms period. Historically, Fan Fang is known for his role in the defense of Liaodong against the massive expeditionary force sent by the Cao Wei state, commanded by the brilliant strategist Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý). When Sima Yi arrived in Liaodong in 238 AD to quell Gongsun Yuan’s rebellion and his declaration of self-proclaimed kingship, Fan Fang was tasked with leading infantry forces to intercept the Wei army at the Liao River. However, he was outmaneuvered by Sima Yi, who utilized a ruse to draw the Liaodong forces away from the river while his main army crossed at a different point, leading to the eventual collapse of the Liaodong defenses.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
As Sima Yi approached the Liaodong territory, he ordered his troops to feign a direct attack while secretly flanking the main defensive positions. Fan Fang, guarding the river crossing, was deceived by the maneuver and led his troops into a trap, allowing Sima Yi to bypass the defenses and march directly upon the capital, Xiangping.
