Historical Note on Historicity

Liu Xian is a purely fictional character created for the novel. No historical record mentions a son of the historical Administrator Liu Du of Lingling. The real Liu Du surrendered to Liu Bei in 209 along with the other southern Jing administrators; the novel invents Liu Xian and the general Xing Daorong to dramatise the capture of Lingling.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms Portrayal

In Chapter 52, when Liu Bei’s army advances on Lingling, Liu Du’s son Liu Xian confidently recommends the local general Xing Daorong (“a match for ten thousand men”) and leads 10,000 troops out of the city. Xing Daorong is defeated and captured by Zhao Yun / Zhang Fei, then released on the pretext of capturing Liu Xian. Instead, Xing Daorong and Liu Xian plot an ambush. Zhuge Liang anticipates the trap; Xing Daorong is killed by Zhao Yun and Liu Xian is captured by Zhang Fei. Brought before Zhuge Liang, Liu Xian is ordered to return to Lingling and persuade his father to surrender, with the threat that the people of the city will otherwise be slaughtered. Liu Xian returns, describes Zhuge Liang’s virtue, and urges Liu Du to open the gates. Liu Du surrenders with his seals; he is retained as Administrator of Lingling, while Liu Xian is sent to serve with the Shu army in Jing Province.
