Biography & Historical Record
Liu Xian (刘贤, Lưu Hiền) is a novel-only son of Liu Du (刘度, Lưu Độ), Grand Administrator of Lingling (零陵, Linh Lăng) in southern Jing. He appears in Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chapter 52 as the overconfident heir who recommends the fictional champion Xing Daorong (邢道荣, Hình Đạo Vinh), leads a sortie, joins a failed ambush, and is captured — then persuades his father to open the gates to Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị). No Sanguozhi or Hou Hanshu notice records a son of the historical Liu Du; the real administrator surrendered Lingling in 209 without this dramatized father–son arc. He is not Liu Xian (Han) (刘羡, Lưu Tiến) (id 10875), the Eastern Han Prince of Chen / Donghai.
After the surrender, the novel keeps Liu Du as Administrator for a time and sends Liu Xian to serve with Liu Bei’s Jing forces — a tidy literary close that turns a quiet historical submission into a short battlefield comedy of overconfidence, ruse, capture, and filial persuasion.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 52 (Zhuge Liang Cleverly Seizes Four Commanderies; Zhao Yun Uses Strategy to Capture Guiyang — Lingling episode): When Liu Bei’s army approaches Lingling, Liu Xian urges resistance and praises Xing Daorong as a match for ten thousand men. They lead about 10,000 out of the city. Xing Daorong is defeated and captured by Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân) / Zhang Fei (张飞, Trương Phi) colour in the campaign, then released on the pretext of bringing Liu Xian over. Instead Xing Daorong and Liu Xian plot an ambush. Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) anticipates the trap: Zhao Yun kills Xing Daorong; Zhang Fei captures Liu Xian. Brought before Zhuge Liang, Liu Xian is ordered back into Lingling to persuade Liu Du to surrender, under threat that otherwise the city and people will suffer. He returns, praises Zhuge Liang’s virtue, and urges his father to open the gates. Liu Du surrenders his seals; Liu Bei retains him as Administrator; Liu Xian is attached to the Jingzhou army.
Liu Xian (刘贤) — Historical & Literary Timeline
Sortie from Lingling with Xing Daorong
Recommends Xing Daorong; leads troops against Liu Bei’s southern Jing advance. First capture/defeat cycle begins the Lingling episode.
Failed ambush; capture; persuasion of Liu Du
Plots with the released Xing Daorong; Zhuge Liang foresaw it. Xing Daorong dies to Zhao Yun; Liu Xian falls to Zhang Fei; released to talk Liu Du into surrender. Gates open; Liu Xian joins Liu Bei’s Jing force.
No recorded son — quiet Lingling surrender
Historical Liu Du yields Lingling among the four southern commanderies after Red Cliffs. Sources do not name a Liu Xian (刘贤) or Xing Daorong — both are Romance inventions for dramatic colour.
Homonym caution: not Liu Xian (Han) 刘羡 at /liu-xian-han/.
Key Relationships
Family
- Liu Du (刘度, Lưu Độ): Father (novel only as parent of Liu Xian). Administrator of Lingling; opens the gates after his son’s persuasion. Historically a real official; the son is fictional.
Friends
- Xing Daorong (邢道荣, Hình Đạo Vinh): Fictional Lingling champion whom Liu Xian recommends and later conspires with in the ambush; slain by Zhao Yun when the ruse fails — Liu Xian’s closest battlefield partner in the chapter.
- Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị): Eventual overlord after the surrender; retains Liu Du and takes Liu Xian into Jing service — the bond shifts from enemy commander to incorporated officer.
Enemies
- Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng): Anticipates the ambush, captures the political initiative, and sends Liu Xian back as a living surrender messenger.
- Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân): Kills Xing Daorong and breaks the Lingling field force in the novel episode.
- Zhang Fei (张飞, Trương Phi): Captures Liu Xian alive in the failed ambush aftermath.
Other
- Southern Jing four-commanderies campaign: Same arc as Guiyang / Changsha / Wuling submissions under Liu Bei after Red Cliffs — Lingling is dramatized through Liu Xian while other commanderies use different local champions.
- Homonym — Liu Xian (Han) (刘羡, Lưu Tiến): Separate post at /liu-xian-han/ (id 10875). Prince of Chen / Donghai under Cao Cao’s Xuchang watch — different 汉字, different career; never merge family or links.
- Historicity note: Treat every battlefield deed of Liu Xian as Romance invention layered onto the historical Liu Du surrender of 209.

In History
Summary
- Liu Xian (刘贤, Lưu Hiền) as son of Liu Du is a Romance invention. The historical Administrator Liu Du of Lingling surrendered to Liu Bei’s southern Jing campaign (209) without a recorded son of this name or a Xing Daorong duel cycle.
Year: 209 AD
- Liu Du yields Lingling among the four southern Jing commanderies after Red Cliffs. No SGZ biography of a Liu Xian (刘贤) attached to that surrender.
Historical Record
- Silence in Sanguozhi / Pei notes on any Lingling heir named 刘贤; contrast Romance Ch.52. Do not confuse with Liu Xian (刘羡), Prince of Chen / Donghai (/liu-xian-han/).
