Biography & Historical Record
Liang Xu (active early to mid 3rd century AD), courtesy name Boyuan, was an official and military officer who served under the warlord Cao Cao, the state of Cao Wei, and later defected to the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. Born in Tianshui Commandery, Liang Xu initially served as a minor official in his home province of Liang Province, where he gained a reputation for competence and local influence.
In 228 AD, during Zhuge Liang’s first northern expedition against Cao Wei, Liang Xu, along with fellow officials Jiang Wei, Liang Shuang, and Yin Kai, found himself caught up in the rapid shifting of regional allegiances. When Jiang Wei persuaded the local commanderies to defect to Shu Han, Liang Xu joined in supporting Zhuge Liang’s forces. However, due to subsequent strategic counter-offensives led by Wei general Sima Yi and Guo Huai, the defection proved difficult to sustain long-term, and Liang Xu eventually integrated back into the broader administrative and military networks of the era.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s epic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liang Xu is portrayed as a regional official of Tianshui Commandery who becomes entangled in the dramatic events of Zhuge Liang’s first northern expedition in Chapter 93. When Jiang Wei orchestrates the defection of Tianshui and Nan’an commanderies to Shu Han, Liang Xu is among the local leaders who cooperate with the transition.
His role in the narrative reflects the volatility of the northwestern borderlands during the early northern expeditions, highlighting how local officials navigated the intense power struggles between Shu Han and Cao Wei.
