Yuan Yi (died 192 AD), courtesy name Boye, was an official and regional warlord during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. Born into the prestigious Yuan clan of Shouchang, Chenliu Commandery, he was a cousin of Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu. Known for his upright character and intelligence, Yuan Yi began his official career serving in various commandery and imperial posts, including Grand Administrator of Dong Commandery. In 190 AD, when the grand regional coalition formed to overthrow the tyrannical chancellor Dong Zhuo, Yuan Yi joined the alliance with his regional forces, working alongside his cousin Yuan Shao and other warlords to restore order. However, following the collapse and division of the coalition, internal rivalries erupted among the warlords. In 192 AD, while stationed in Shouchang, Yuan Yi’s army suffered from severe supply shortages, leading to a mutiny among his disgruntled soldiers. During the chaos of the rebellion, Yuan Yi was killed by his own mutinous subordinates.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s epic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yuan Yi appears in Chapter 5 as the Grand Administrator of Dong Commandery and one of the eighteen regional lords who answer Cao Cao’s call to arms against Dong Zhuo. He participates in the grand coalition camp at Suanzao, where the allied lords swear a solemn blood oath to rescue the Han Dynasty and eliminate Dong Zhuo.
While the novel does not focus heavily on his individual combat achievements, Yuan Yi’s presence highlights the extensive political influence and military mobilization of the powerful Yuan lineage during the initial anti-Dong Zhuo campaign.
