Biography & Historical Record
Xiahou En (died 208 AD) is a fictional military officer appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel, he is depicted as a trusted family relative, personal favorite, and sword-bearer of the northern warlord Cao Cao. Highly favored by Cao Cao for his personal devotion and lineage, Xiahou En was granted the extraordinary privilege of carrying one of Cao Cao’s two prized personal masterwork weapons: the legendary Qinggang Sword (Khinh Cương Kiếm). While Cao Cao retained the Yitian Sword (Ỷ Thiên Kiếm) at his own side for personal defense, Xiahou En was entrusted to carry the Qinggang Sword, a weapon celebrated for its ability to cut through iron like clay and sever armor with effortless ease.
During the Battle of Changban (Dangyang) in 208 AD, as Cao Cao’s grand expeditionary army ruthlessly pursued Liu Bei’s fleeing forces and civilian refugees, Xiahou En utilized his position as an elite officer to plunder and loot surrounding villages along the battle lines. Arrogant, overconfident, and detached from his main contingent, Xiahou En rode ahead of his troops while carrying the Qinggang Sword strapped across his back. He unexpectedly crossed paths with Shu Han’s legendary general Zhao Yun (Zhao Zilong), who was desperately searching the chaotic battlefield for Liu Bei’s lost family and infant son, Liu Shan (A’Dou). Before Xiahou En could react or draw his weapon, Zhao Yun charged forward with his spear, thrusting through Xiahou En and slaying him instantly. Zhao Yun seized the prized Qinggang Sword from Xiahou En’s corpse, using it alongside his spear to slaughter dozens of Wei generals and break through Cao Cao’s iron encirclement in his iconic single-handed rescue of infant A’Dou.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xiahou En’s narrative significance is centered squarely on Chapter 41. Introduced as Cao Cao’s favored relative, he is entrusted with guarding the Qinggang Sword. During the chaotic pursuit at Changban, Xiahou En turns his attention to plundering civilians and becomes isolated. Spotting Zhao Yun riding through the lines, Xiahou En attempts to engage him but is slain in a single spear thrust by the Shu hero. Zhao Yun retrieves the Qinggang Sword from Xiahou En, adding a legendary heirloom weapon to his arsenal that proves decisive during his heroic breakout through fifty divisions of Wei forces.
