Biography & Historical Record
Wang Zhi (died 200 AD) is a fictional military officer appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel, he serves as the Grand Administrator and military defender of Xingyang (Huynh Duong), a fortified commandery town situated along the critical highway leading toward the Yellow River crossings. Wang Zhi maintained close marital and familial ties with Han Fu, the Grand Administrator of Xingyang Pass, acting as his sworn relative and brother-in-law.
In 200 AD, word reached Xingyang that Guan Yu had slain Kong Xiu at Donghe Pass, eliminated Han Fu and Meng Tan at Xingyang Pass, and escaped Bian Xi’s ambush at Zhenguo Temple during his legendary single-handed journey escorting Liu Bei’s wives (Lady Cam and Lady Mi) back to his sworn brother. Overcome with grief and rage over the death of his relative Han Fu, Wang Zhi swore to avenge his death and eliminate Guan Yu. Recognizing Guan Yu’s formidable martial reputation, Wang Zhi eschewed a direct duel, devising a treacherous arson plot instead.
Upon Guan Yu’s arrival, Wang Zhi feigned great warmth and reverence, leading a grand welcoming party outside the city walls. He arranged luxurious lodging for Guan Yu and his party at a government guest house, hosting a banquet with fine wine and meats to lower Guan Yu’s guard. Secretly, Wang Zhi instructed his deputy officer Hu Ban to lead 1,000 imperial guards to surround the guest house at midnight, pile dry firewood and kerosene against the walls, and burn Guan Yu and his entire entourage alive. However, Hu Ban, who admired Guan Yu’s honor and possessed a family letter delivered by Guan Yu from his father Hu Hua, betrayed Wang Zhi and revealed the plot. Warned in time, Guan Yu secretly fled the city under cover of darkness with his convoy. Learning that the guest house was burning while Guan Yu had escaped, Wang Zhi personally led a cavalry unit in hot pursuit. When Wang Zhi caught up, Guan Yu confronted him over his hypocrisy, shouting: ‘Old villain! I have no grudge against you, why do you ruthlessly attempt to burn me alive?’ Wang Zhi charged with his spear in panic, but Guan Yu swept his Green Dragon Crescent Blade, cleaving Wang Zhi in two at the waist and clearing the fourth pass of his journey.
Historically, Wang Zhi is entirely a literary creation of Luo Guanzhong, as Guan Yu’s historical journey from Xuchang was unimpeded by pass commanders or arson conspiracies.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wang Zhi’s narrative unfolds in Chapter 27. Sworn to avenge his brother-in-law Han Fu, Wang Zhi welcomes Guan Yu with deceptive hospitality and arranges a trap to burn him alive inside a guest house using 1,000 guards under Hu Ban. After Hu Ban uncovers the plot to Guan Yu, Guan Yu escapes, prompting Wang Zhi to pursue him on horseback. Guan Yu turns on his pursuer, reprimands his deceit, and cleaves Wang Zhi in two with a single strike of his Crescent Blade, demonstrating that hypocrisy and treacherous arson cannot prevail against righteous honor.
