Biography & Historical Record
Kong Xiu (died 200 AD) is a fictional military commander appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s historic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel, he serves as the border commander and garrison officer of Donghe Pass (Dongling Pass), the first strategic mountain gate guarding the transit corridor leading north from Cao Cao’s capital at Xuchang toward the Yellow River crossings. He commands a garrison force of approximately 500 imperial guards tasked with enforcing strict border security and pass entry clearance.
In 200 AD, following news that his sworn brother Liu Bei was in Yuan Shao’s camp, Guan Yu resigned his titles, sealed his gifts, and departed Xuchang to escort his two sisters-in-law (Lady Cam and Lady Mi) back to Liu Bei. Due to his hasty departure, Guan Yu did not receive an official written exit pass signed by Cao Cao. Arriving at Donghe Pass, Guan Yu requested passage, but Kong Xiu strictly enforced military law, refusing to open the gates without official documentation and demanding that Guan Yu leave the two ladies behind as hostages while awaiting clearance from Xuchang.
Enraged by the demand to hold his sisters-in-law hostage, Guan Yu confronted Kong Xiu. Kong Xiu donned his armor, mounted his horse, and rode out with his guards to engage Guan Yu in combat. In a duel lasting less than a single bout, Guan Yu swept his Green Dragon Crescent Blade, severing Kong Xiu’s head and slaying him instantly. Terrified by the swift execution of their commander, the garrison surrendered, allowing Guan Yu to clear the first pass of his legendary journey ‘Riding Alone for a Thousand Li’.
Historically, Kong Xiu is entirely a fictional creation by Luo Guanzhong, as Guan Yu’s historical departure from Xuchang was unimpeded by mountain passes or armed garrisons.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Kong Xiu’s dramatic role is featured in Chapter 27. As the defender of Donghe Pass, he rigidly adheres to military protocol by refusing passage to Guan Yu without official entry papers. When Kong Xiu insists on retaining Lady Cam and Lady Mi as hostages, Guan Yu flies into a rage. Kong Xiu dons his armor and challenges Guan Yu, but is decapitated in less than a single bout by Guan Yu’s Crescent Blade. His swift death establishes the tone for Guan Yu’s heroic breakout across five passes.
