Biography & Historical Record
Bao Zhong is a fictional military officer appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel’s narrative, he is depicted as the younger brother of Bao Xin, the Lord of Jibei and one of the prominent warlords who joined the regional coalition against the tyrannical prime minister Dong Zhuo in 190 AD. In historical reality, Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi) makes no mention of Bao Zhong; the historical individual who led the vanguard for Bao Xin and was slain at Sishui Pass was actually Bao Xin’s younger brother Bao Tao (Bao Xun’s uncle). Luo Guanzhong altered the name to Bao Zhong in the novel to dramatize the early military engagements of the anti-Dong Zhuo coalition.
In Chapter 5 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, during the mobilization of the eighteen coalition warlords at Sishui Pass, Sun Jian was selected as the official vanguard commander by coalition leader Yuan Shao. Jealous of Sun Jian’s impending military glory and eager to claim the honor of achieving the first victory for his own family, Bao Xin secretly ordered Bao Zhong to lead a fast-moving detachment of 3,000 infantry and cavalry through a shortcut past Sun Jian’s camp to launch a surprise assault against Sishui Pass.
Arriving at the base of the pass before Sun Jian, Bao Zhong challenged Dong Zhuo’s garrison forces. Dong Zhuo’s terrifying vanguard general, Hua Xiong, led 500 elite armored cavalry sweeping down the mountain pass. Caught completely unprepared by Hua Xiong’s fierce charge, Bao Zhong attempted to turn and retreat, but Hua Xiong closed the distance with terrifying speed. With a single swing of his blade, Hua Xiong cleaved Bao Zhong off his horse, slaying him instantly on the battlefield. Hua Xiong decapitated Bao Zhong and sent his severed head back to Luoyang as a trophy, earning high rewards from Dong Zhuo. Bao Zhong’s rash, unauthorized expedition not only cost him his life but also caused heavy casualties among his 3,000 troops, serving as the dramatic opening tragedy that highlighted Hua Xiong’s martial prowess before Sun Jian and Guan Yu arrived at the front lines.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Bao Zhong’s role is featured in Chapter 5. Driven by his brother Bao Xin’s jealousy of Sun Jian’s vanguard role, Bao Zhong leads an unauthorized strike force of 3,000 troops to attack Sishui Pass first. Confronted by Dong Zhuo’s general Hua Xiong, Bao Zhong panics during Hua Xiong’s swift cavalry charge and is slain in a single pass. Hua Xiong decapitates him and sends his head to Luoyang, using Bao Zhong’s tragic defeat to demonstrate the terrifying martial strength of Dong Zhuo’s inner defenses.
