Chen Dao (active early to mid 3rd century AD), courtesy name Shuzhi, was a military officer of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. Born in Yiyang, Runan Commandery, Chen Dao was renowned for his exceptional martial prowess, loyalty, and steadfast courage. From the early years of the turbulent late Eastern Han dynasty, Chen Dao joined Liu Bei and remained one of his most trusted and dependable military commanders, serving alongside Zhao Yun as a core commander of elite guards and personal troops.

Following Liu Bei’s establishment of the Shu Han state and the subsequent campaigns, Chen Dao commanded the elite White-feathered Unit (Baishibing), a fearsome force known for its mountain warfare capabilities and absolute discipline. After the death of Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang, Chen Dao continued to serve loyally under Liu Shan and Zhuge Liang during the northern expeditions, holding senior military ranks including General Who Guards the West and Marquis of Yongning. In Luo Guanzhong’s epic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chen Dao is portrayed as a valiant, fiercely loyal, and reliable general who stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Zhao Yun in protecting Liu Bei and his family through perilous military crises. Introduced during the turbulent retreats and southern campaigns, Chen Dao demonstrates extraordinary bravery in shielding Liu Bei’s forces from pursuing enemies.

His steadfast devotion is especially highlighted during moments of extreme danger, where his elite troops provide critical rear-guard protection. Although operating often as a steadfast lieutenant in the shadow of more prominent generals, Chen Dao’s unwavering loyalty and martial contributions form an integral part of the military backbone of Shu Han.
