Biography & Historical Record
Fan Yufeng (樊玉凤, Phàn Ngọc Phụng) was the sister-in-law of Zhao Fan (赵范, Triệu Phạm), the Prefect of Guiyang (桂阳, Quế Dương) during the late Han Dynasty. Following the death of her husband, she resided with her brother-in-law. She is primarily noted in historical accounts for being the subject of a political marriage proposal by Zhao Fan to the Shu Han general Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân) after the latter conquered Guiyang.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
“I am a woman who has lost her husband. My brother-in-law wishes to remarry me to a hero, and among all heroes under Heaven, none compare to General Zhao. Therefore, I am willing to entrust my life to him.”
In Luo Guanzhong’s epic, after Zhao Yun successfully occupies Guiyang, Zhao Fan offers to form an alliance by marrying his sister-in-law to the general. Zhao Yun, having been a sworn brother to Zhao Fan, is initially offended by this proposition, viewing it as a breach of familial ethics. He refuses the offer, stating that as Zhao Fan’s sworn brother, he views the woman as his own sister. The interaction exposes the internal tension of the era’s social norms and the pragmatic nature of warlords attempting to secure their positions through kin-based alliances.

In History
Period I
- Fan Yufeng (樊氏, Phàn Ngọc Phượng, Phàn Thị) was the widowed sister-in-law of Zhao Fan (赵范, Triệu Phạm), the Administrator of Guiyang. In the Yun Biezhuan, quoted by Pei Songzhi in the Sanguozhi, she is identified only by her family name, Fan (樊氏), and described as exceptionally beautiful.
Period II
- Fan Yufeng (樊氏, Phàn Ngọc Phượng, Phàn Thị) was proposed by Zhao Fan as a marriage partner for Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân). Zhao Yun refused, explaining that because Zhao Fan shared his surname and was his brother-like associate, Zhao Fan’s sister-in-law should be regarded as his own sister-in-law. Zhao Yun also suspected that Zhao Fan had surrendered under pressure and that his intentions could not be trusted.
Historical Status
- Fan Yufeng (樊氏, Phàn Ngọc Phượng, Phàn Thị) was a historical woman recorded as Fan Shi (樊氏) in the Yun Biezhuan, a source quoted in the Sanguozhi. The personal name “Yufeng” is not given in this historical source and belongs to later literary, theatrical, or popular traditions. The historical record therefore confirms Fan Shi’s existence but does not establish “Yufeng” as her historical personal name.
