Biography & Historical Record
Feng Shi (Lady Feng) was a noblewoman during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the turbulent Three Kingdoms period. She was the daughter of Feng Fang, a senior imperial official who served as one of the Eight Colonels of the Western Garden alongside Yuan Shao and Cao Cao. Renowned for her unmatched beauty and grace, she became the favored consort of warlord Yuan Shu after seeking refuge in Yang Province amid the chaos of the central realm.
The Life and Tragic Demise of Feng Shi
When Yuan Shu established his regional power base in Shouchun, he fell deeply in love with her, elevating her status above all other women in his harem. Her supreme favor provoked bitter jealousy among the warlord’s other concubines. Seeking to destroy her, the envious concubines deceptively advised her that Yuan Shu held deep respect for women of sensitive sentiment and urged her to weep frequently to show grief for the realm. Feng Shi trusted their deceitful counsel and wept often before the warlord, which moved him to cherish her even more profoundly.
Realizing their scheme had only increased her favor, the conspirators took lethal action. They ambushed the consort, strangled her to death, and hung her corpse from a palace toilet beam to fabricate a suicide driven by sorrow. Deceived by the staged scene, Yuan Shu sincerely mourned her loss and arranged an elaborate, honorable burial.
Legacy and Historical Accounts
Documented in historical annals including the Records of the Three Kingdoms (citing the Jiuzhou Chunqiu and Dianlüe), her tragic end highlights the deadly palace intrigue and moral corruption that plagued Yuan Shu’s court prior to his ultimate defeat.
