Historical Background
Gongsun Xu was from Liaoxi Commandery in You Province and the son of Gongsun Zan. In 198–199, Yuan Shao laid siege to Gongsun Zan’s fortified base at Yijing (易京). With his own forces unable to break the siege, Gongsun Zan sent his son Gongsun Xu to the bandit warlord Zhang Yan (of the Heishan / Black Mountain Bandits) to request reinforcements. Zhang Yan commanded a large force (traditionally given as 100,000), while Gongsun Xu himself led about 5,000 cavalry.
While they were arranging the timing of the relief force, a letter intended to coordinate the rendezvous was intercepted by Yuan Shao’s men. Yuan Shao therefore prepared an ambush. When Gongsun Xu and Zhang Yan advanced, they were defeated. Gongsun Xu was killed in the fighting (or in the subsequent collapse of Gongsun Zan’s position) in 199. Shortly afterward Yijing itself fell; Gongsun Zan died by suicide (or was killed) and the Gongsun regime in the north was extinguished.
In the Games
Gongsun Xu appears in Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends at Jieqiao and in Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends at Changshan as part of Gongsun Zan’s reinforcements to the Heishan Bandits. In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms strategy series he is a decent general with balanced statistics (mid-50s to high-60s), stronger in war and charisma, suitable as a supporting military officer.

Fall of the Gongsun Regime
Yuan Shao ambushed the approaching relief column. Gongsun Xu was defeated and killed. Yijing fell soon afterward; Gongsun Zan perished and the family’s power in You Province came to an end. The novel summarises the destruction of Gongsun Zan in Chapter 21 without naming Gongsun Xu.
Historical Note
Gongsun Xu is a historically attested son of Gongsun Zan whose only prominent recorded action is the failed attempt to bring Zhang Yan’s Heishan forces to the relief of Yijing. The interception of his correspondence and the subsequent ambush sealed both his own fate and that of his father’s regime. He does not appear as a named character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms; the chapter references above therefore reflect the broader narrative context of Gongsun Zan’s final defeat rather than an individual novel episode.
