Historical Background
Gongsun Yue was a close relative of the warlord Gongsun Zan. In 191, when Emperor Xian secretly sent Liu Yu’s son Liu He north to seek aid against Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shu detained Liu He and used him to demand troops and supplies from Liu Yu. Despite Gongsun Zan’s objections, Liu Yu complied. Fearing Yuan Shu’s resentment, Gongsun Zan dispatched Gongsun Yue with 1,000 men and supplies to assist Yuan Shu.
Later that year Yuan Shao ordered Zhou Yu (styled Renming) to attack Sun Jian at Yangcheng as the latter returned from Luoyang. Yuan Shu sent Gongsun Yue to reinforce Sun Jian. Although the engagement was successful, Gongsun Yue was struck by a stray arrow and died. Gongsun Zan held Yuan Shao responsible for the death and declared war, beginning the long northern conflict that culminated in the Battle of Jieqiao and the eventual destruction of Gongsun Zan’s power.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms Narrative
In the novel Gongsun Yue is presented as Gongsun Zan’s younger half-brother. After the two warlords had agreed on a joint attack on Ji Province, Gongsun Zan sent Gongsun Yue as envoy to demand that Yuan Shao divide the province. Yuan Shao received him courteously and told him to bring Gongsun Zan so that they might discuss matters in person. On the return journey Gongsun Yue was ambushed and killed by men who claimed to be Dong Zhuo’s bodyguards. Only Gongsun Yue was targeted; the rest of his escort escaped and reported the assassination. Gongsun Zan concluded that Yuan Shao had betrayed him and immediately raised arms against Yuan Shao, setting the stage for the subsequent campaigns in the north.

Catalyst for Gongsun–Yuan Conflict
In the novel he is assassinated on the road after acting as envoy to Yuan Shao; historically he dies of a stray arrow while aiding Yuan Shu. In both accounts his death becomes the immediate pretext for Gongsun Zan’s declaration of war on Yuan Shao, leading to the campaigns that include the Battle of Jieqiao.
Historical Note
Gongsun Yue is a minor but pivotal historical figure: his death in 191 supplied Gongsun Zan with the casus belli against Yuan Shao and thereby opened the long northern war that ultimately destroyed the Gongsun regime. The novel rearranges the circumstances—turning a battlefield casualty into a deliberate assassination by agents posing as Dong Zhuo’s men—so that the betrayal appears more personal and dramatic, while preserving the essential consequence: open war between the two northern warlords.
