Biography & Historical Record
Han Tao (韩滔, Hàn Thao) was a military official serving under Commander-in-Chief Hu Yanzhuo (呼延灼, Hô Diên Chước) during the Northern Song Dynasty. Originally a garrison commander in Chenzhou, he was recruited by Hu Yanzhuo to lead the vanguard in the imperial campaign to suppress the outlaws of Liangshan Marsh (梁山泊, Lương Sơn Bạc). Despite his nickname, ‘The General of Hundred Victories,’ he met his match against the superior martial prowess and tactical adaptability of the Liangshan heroes. After being defeated and captured by Qin Ming (秦明, Tần Minh), he was persuaded by Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) to defect to the Liangshan cause. Upon joining, he became one of the 108 Stars of Destiny, ranking as the 42nd overall and serving as one of the Five Tiger Generals of the Liangshan cavalry.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Han Tao does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his character archetype in Water Margin serves as a critique of the corrupt Song imperial military structure, where capable men were forced to choose between dishonorable service or life as an outlaw.
