Biography & Historical Record
Lady Zhen was a noblewoman of the Han Dynasty and later the Cao Wei state. Renowned for her legendary beauty, she was first married to Yuan Xi, the son of the warlord Yuan Shao. After the Battle of Ye, she was taken by Cao Pi, the son of Cao Cao. She became the Empress Dowager posthumously when her son, Cao Rui, ascended the throne. She was famously known as the inspiration for the poem ‘Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River’ attributed to Cao Zhi.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s novel, her beauty is described as being able to ‘topple cities and kingdoms.’ Her romantic connection, or at least the intense admiration expressed by Cao Zhi, serves as a poignant sub-plot that heightens the tension between the brothers Cao Pi and Cao Zhi after the death of their father.
