Biography & Historical Record
Ma Yuanyi (马元义, Mã Nguyên Nghĩa) (? – 184) was a senior Yellow Turban organiser—a Large Division (大方) leader under Zhang Jiao (张角, Trương Giác)—entrusted with recruiting in Jing and Yang provinces, concentrating forces at Ye (邺) in Wei Commandery, and securing eunuch allies inside Luoyang for a coordinated rising. When the plot was betrayed, he was arrested in the capital and executed; historically by chariot-dismemberment (车裂), while Romance of the Three Kingdoms simplifies the death to beheading.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 1: Zhang Jiao sends Ma Yuanyi with gold and silk to bribe the palace eunuch Feng Xu (封谞, Phong Tư) and arrange an internal rising in Luoyang timed with the provincial revolt. Disciple Tang Zhou (唐周, Đường Chu) defects and reports the conspiracy. He Jin (何进, Hà Tiến), on imperial order from Emperor Ling (汉灵帝, Hán Linh Đế), seizes Ma Yuanyi; the novel says he is beheaded. Arrest of collaborating eunuchs follows; Zhang Jiao is forced to launch the Yellow Turban Rebellion ahead of schedule.
History vs novel: The operational outline (capital agent, eunuch collusion, Tang Zhou’s betrayal, premature rising) is shared. Manner of death differs—history: 车裂 (torn apart by chariots); novel: beheading.
