Shan Tinggui (单廷珪, Đan Đình Khuê) is a fictional character from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. He originally served as a military commander in Lingzhou under the Song government. Renowned for his unique ability to command water-based tactics and military formations, he earned the epithet ‘Sacred Water General’. Alongside his colleague Wei Dingguo (魏定国, Ngụy Định Quốc), he was tasked with suppressing the outlaws of Liangshan Marsh. After being captured by the Liangshan forces through the stratagems of Guan Sheng (关胜, Quan Thắng), he pledged loyalty to the rebels and became the 44th leader, ranking among the 72 Earthly Fiends.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Shan Tinggui does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his tactical character design draws inspiration from classic military archetypes often celebrated in Chinese historical fiction. His transition from a loyal government official to an outlaw reflects the core themes of the Water Margin, where righteous men are forced to rebel against a corrupt administration.
