Squire Song (宋太公, Tống Thái Công), the venerable patriarch of the Song Family Village (宋家村) in Yuncheng County, is one of the most respected parental figures in Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan). He was the devoted father of Liangshan Grand Chieftain Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang – Welcome Rain) and Iron Fan Song Qing (宋清).
Knowing that his eldest son Song Jiang served as a county clerk and frequently consorted with outlaws out of boundless charity, Squire Song took the prudent legal precaution of formally disowning Song Jiang in county registers to insulate the ancestral estate and his younger son from collective family guilt. When Song Jiang was forced to kill his treacherous concubine Yan Poxi, Squire Song hid Song Jiang in an ingeniously concealed underground cellar behind the family shrine, defying corrupt constable search parties.
Later, when Song Jiang was wanted throughout the empire after the Jiangzhou poem incident, Liangshan heroes led by Chao Gai raided Yuncheng to rescue Squire Song. Safely transported to the mountain stronghold, Squire Song was installed in the Hall of Loyalty and Justice, receiving filial obeisance from all 108 stars of destiny until the grand imperial amnesty.
