Historical Life of Su You
Su You (苏由) was a military officer serving under the warlord Yuan Shang, the youngest son and successor of Yuan Shao, during the turbulent late Eastern Han dynasty. Stationed at the primary regional citadel of Yecheng in Ji Province, he held a vital post in guarding the clan’s core northern territory.
In 204 AD, while Yuan Shang campaigned against his elder brother Yuan Tan, Cao Cao seized the strategic opportunity to besiege Yecheng. The defense of the citadel fell upon chief advisor Shen Pei alongside his garrison commanders. Recognizing the regime’s precarious standing and the overwhelming power of the besieging army, the garrison officer secretly plotted a mutiny to open the city gates and surrender.
However, Shen Pei uncovered the conspiracy before it could be fully realized. Ferocious urban combat erupted throughout the streets of Yecheng between loyalist forces and the mutineers. Outmatched inside the fortress, the defeated officer broke through the outer gate and fled directly to Cao Cao’s camp. Pleased with his timely submission and the valuable tactical intelligence he shared regarding the city’s internal strife, Cao Cao conferred upon him the noble title of Marquis.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel set in the Three Kingdoms era, Su You mirrors his historical role during the campaign for Ji Province in Chapter 32. Convinced that the fortress cannot endure Cao Cao’s relentless siege, he attempts to hand over the gates to preserve his life, only to be routed by Shen Pei’s counterattack before fleeing to the imperial camp.
