Biography & Historical Record
Yin Feng (courtesy name Xiushan) was a civil official and military advisor who served the Eastern Han dynasty and later the state of Cao Wei during the late Three Kingdoms period. Born in Wuwei Commandery (present-day Wuwei, Gansu Province), Yin Feng served as a local official in Liang Province and was known for his steady administration, integrity, and knowledge of frontier affairs.
During Ma Chao’s siege of Ji City (Jicheng) in 213 AD, Yin Feng served as an officer under Governor Wei Kang. Following Wei Kang’s tragic murder by Ma Chao, Yin Feng joined a covert coalition of loyalist officers organized by Zhao Ang, Yang Fu, Jiang Xu, Liang Kuan, and Zhao Qu to avenge Wei Kang and reclaim Liang Province. Spurred on by the heroic Wang Yi (wife of Zhao Ang), Yin Feng participated in planning the synchronized uprising. When Jiang Xu and Yang Fu raised troops at Licheng to draw Ma Chao out of Ji City, Yin Feng co-led defenses and helped secure strategic positions inside Liang Province. Once Ma Chao sallied out to engage Licheng, Zhao Qu and Liang Kuan closed the gates of Ji City, slaughtering Ma Chao’s family members left inside. Yin Feng held his assigned defensive post against Ma Chao’s desperate retaliatory counter-attacks until Xiahou Yuan’s relief army arrived from Chang’an, successfully driving Ma Chao into Hanzhong and securing Liang Province for Cao Cao.
For his loyalty and merit in driving out Ma Chao, Yin Feng was commended by Cao Cao’s administration and appointed Grand Administrator of Dunhuang Commandery, where he maintained peace and effective frontier governance for many years.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yin Feng’s narrative is highlighted in Chapter 64 as a loyal military officer of Ji City. Deeply grief-stricken over Ma Chao’s execution of Governor Wei Kang, Yin Feng enters the secret pact organized by Yang Fu and Zhao Ang. Along with his co-conspirators, Yin Feng executes a deceptive multi-pronged plan: Jiang Xu and Yang Fu lure Ma Chao to Licheng, allowing Zhao Qu and Liang Kuan to seize Ji City and lock Ma Chao out. Yin Feng guards key mountain passes and holds firm against Ma Chao’s furious retaliatory assaults, helping to permanently expel the warlord from Liang Province and restore imperial authority under Cao Cao.
