Life and Legacy of Zhang Zun
Zhang Zun was a dedicated military officer and imperial official of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. As the grandson of the legendary founding general Zhang Fei and the son of Zhang Bao, he inherited a proud martial lineage and a deep commitment to the imperial court. Serving as an Attendant to the Secretariat, he earned broad respect for his integrity and steadfast loyalty to Emperor Liu Shan.
The Last Stand at Mianzhu
In 263 AD, the rival state of Cao Wei launched an all-out conquest against Shu Han. The veteran Wei commander Deng Ai executed a daring maneuver across the rugged Yinping mountain pass, catching the defenders completely unprepared. When the enemy approached the gates of the capital region, Shu organized an emergency defense force under Zhuge Zhan.
Standing alongside Zhuge Zhan and his son Zhuge Shang, Zhang Zun led his troops into fierce combat against Deng Ai’s veteran invaders at the strategic bottleneck of Mianzhu Pass. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Shu commanders refused to surrender. In the classic historical chronicle Records of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Zun is remembered as a loyal martyr who fought to his last breath, dying honorably on the battlefield to defend his homeland.
