Who Was Zhang Ying in Han History?
Zhang Ying was a prominent military general serving under the regional warlord Liu Yao during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Stationed strategically at the crucial river crossing of Niuzhu along the Yangtze River, he acted as the primary bulwark against the rapid expansion of Sun Ce into the Jiangdong territory.
Despite mounting a determined resistance alongside fellow commanders like Fan Neng, his defensive line was eventually overwhelmed by Sun Ce’s tactical amphibious assault. The loss at Niuzhu proved catastrophic for local resistance; Sun Ce swiftly seized vital stockpiles of grain, weaponry, and naval craft, establishing the foundational momentum needed to secure the south.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Ying is portrayed as a staunch defender whose fortified positions could not withstand Sun Ce’s rising military power. This dramatic engagement underscored Sun Ce’s tactical genius against regional Han loyalists. During the retreat at Moling, naval commander Jiang Qin ambushed the garrison and fatally shot the general during battle.
