The Life and Campaigns of Zhu Huan
Zhu Huan (177–238), courtesy name Xiumu, was a formidable military general of Eastern Wu during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Celebrated for his fearless battlefield valor and keen tactical intellect, he earned profound respect from Sun Quan, even while maintaining an arrogant and uncompromising temperament that occasionally caused friction with fellow commanders.
His crowning achievement came during the Defense of Ruxu (222–223 AD). Confronted by a massive invading force led by Cao Wei’s veteran commander Cao Ren, he held the fortress with only 5,000 men. By feigning weakness, he lured enemy detachments into a lethal ambush, crushed Cao Tai’s siege columns, and slew vanguard officer Chang Diao to secure a miraculous victory against overwhelming odds.
In 228 AD, Zhu Huan served as a senior vanguard commander under Lu Xun at the Battle of Shiting. His bold flanking maneuvers severed enemy supply lines and shattered Cao Xiu’s 100,000-man army, capturing immense war materiel and reinforcing the northern boundary of Wu.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s epic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the general is portrayed as a loyal and stalwart guardian of Eastern Wu.
