Historical Profile of Zhuge Jun
Zhuge Jun was a court official of Shu Han during China’s tumultuous Three Kingdoms period. As the younger sibling of the legendary chancellor Zhuge Liang and prominent Eastern Wu statesman Zhuge Jin, he grew up amid civil warfare and political fragmentation. Following the early death of his father, Zhuge Gui, he moved southward to Jing Province under the protection of his uncle, Zhuge Xuan, eventually settling in the countryside of Longzhong to pursue an agrarian and scholarly lifestyle.
In historical literature and Luo Guanzhong’s classical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhuge Jun is remembered for his tranquil hermit life. When the warlord Liu Bei famously made three visits to their thatched cottage in Nanyang seeking strategic counsel, he personally greeted the lord during the second winter trip. While his famous elder brothers shaped national diplomacy across rival empires, he diligently tended to the ancestral homestead and maintained local intellectual friendships with scholars like Cui Zhouping.
Later in life, Zhuge Jun transitioned away from rural seclusion to join the central administration of Shu Han in Chengdu. During the reign of Liu Bei’s successor, Emperor Liu Shan, he was formally appointed as the Colonel of the Archers (Changshui Xiaowei), an esteemed rank in the capital’s defense forces. Historical annals offer modest commentary on his specific administrative deeds, depicting him as a steady and loyal member of Shu’s inner bureaucracy throughout his remaining years.
