Biography and Career of Zhuge Rong
Zhuge Rong was a prominent military officer and aristocrat of the Eastern Wu state during China’s turbulent Three Kingdoms era. As the younger son of the distinguished statesman Zhuge Jin and the younger brother of the supreme regent Zhuge Ke, he enjoyed immense prestige and inherited his father’s command post at Gongan. Throughout his military service, he held the rank of General Who Pacifies the North and governed critical frontier garrisons.
In 250 AD, during a northern campaign by Cao Wei, Zhuge Rong defended the strategic stronghold of Gongan against General Wang Chang. Although he suffered losses in naval supplies, his defensive position remained intact. However, following the passing of founding emperor Sun Quan, political instability surged through the imperial court. His elder brother consolidated power as regent, but factional animosity soon erupted under imperial clan leader Sun Jun.
The Fall of the Clan in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In historical chronicles and Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel, his fate is framed by the dramatic collapse of his lineage. When Sun Jun launched a bloody coup in 253 AD and assassinated Zhuge Ke, imperial forces immediately marched on Gongan. Surrounded and unable to escape, he chose dignity over capture. Refusing to face public execution and humiliation, Zhuge Rong took his own life by poison alongside his sons in 253 AD.
