Biography & Historical Record
Ning Sui was a tactical advisor serving under Grand General Jiang Wei in the state of Shu Han during the late Three Kingdoms period. Recognized for his keen strategic insight and mastery of mountain geography, he served on Jiang Wei’s central operational council during the defensive campaigns against Cao Wei’s massive invasion in 263 AD.
In the autumn of 263, Cao Wei launched a colossal invasion force led by commanders Zhong Hui, Deng Ai, and Zhuge Xu to conquer Shu Han. When Zhong Hui breached Yangping Pass, Jiang Wei realized the capital was exposed and ordered an immediate retreat toward the impregnable mountain gateway of Jiange. However, Wei general Zhuge Xu occupied the strategic bridgehead at Yinping with 30,000 troops, severing the main army’s retreat route through the mountain ravines.
Facing total encirclement with enemies pressing from both front and rear, the tactical advisor presented an ingenious diversionary stratagem: feign an invasion toward Yong Province along the Konghan valley. Believing his rear command was threatened, Zhuge Xu pulled his garrison away from Yinping to reinforce the north. Jiang Wei’s main columns immediately crossed the bridge unopposed and secured Jiange before the enemy realized the deception.
Role of Ning Sui in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Chapter 116 of Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this strategist is celebrated for outwitting the Wei army and saving the host from catastrophic encirclement.
When trapped at Tazhong with hostile forces attacking from all flanks, Jiang Wei faced despair. The officer rode to his commander’s chariot with the crucial plan. By marching banners into the Konghan road as if to sack Yongzhou, Shu forces tricked Zhuge Xu into retreating thirty li, allowing Shu’s army to destroy the bridgehead fortifications behind them and safely link up with reinforcements at Jiange.
