Zhang Wei was the younger brother of the warlord Zhang Lu, who ruled over the Hanzhong region under the Five Pecks of Rice religious sect. Historically, he served as a general for his brother. In 215 AD, when Cao Cao launched a massive invasion against Hanzhong, Zhang Wei was tasked with defending the strategic Yangping Pass. Despite a stubborn defense against Cao Cao’s elite vanguard, Zhang Wei was eventually overwhelmed and forced to retreat. Following the collapse of the Hanzhong regime, Zhang Wei was killed.

When Cao Cao invades, Zhang Wei argues that Yangping Pass is the key defensive position and takes charge of its defense together with Yang Ang and Yang Ren. His troops initially use the difficult terrain and fortified pass to resist Cao Cao’s advance.
