Biography and Historical Record of Zhang Wei
Zhang Wei was a prominent general and the younger brother of Zhang Lu, the theocratic warlord who governed the Hanzhong commandery under the Way of the Five Pecks of Rice. Entrusted with supreme military responsibilities, he staunchly resisted external threats to safeguard his family’s autonomous domain during the chaotic late Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms era.
In 215 AD, the northern chancellor Cao Cao launched a massive campaign to conquer the strategic territory of Hanzhong. Recognizing the imminent danger, local forces constructed extensive defensive ramparts across the rugged mountain ridges of Yangping Pass. Despite mounting a stubborn defense alongside capable vanguard officers, the mountain fortifications were outmaneuvered and overwhelmed during the decisive Battle of Yangping. Following the collapse of the frontline stronghold, the defiant general was killed in battle, precipitating the ultimate submission of the regional theocracy.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the classic 14th-century historical novel, Zhang Wei appears as an unyielding and loyal military commander. Unlike his brother who deliberated peaceful submission, he vehemently opposed surrender and advocated armed defiance against Cao Cao’s elite expeditionary forces. In Chapter 67, he commands the garrison at Yangping Pass with formidable resolve before ultimately being slain in personal combat by the powerhouse warrior Xu Chu.
