Biography & Historical Record
Qin Qi (died 200 AD) is a fictional military officer appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel, he serves as the border commander and garrison commander of the Yellow River ferry crossing, the final strategic bottleneck guarding the water transit boundary between Cao Cao’s southern territories and Yuan Shao’s northern realm. Possessing a highly distinguished familial lineage as the nephew of Xiahou Dun—Cao Cao’s formidable one-eyed elite general and founding chief commander—Qin Qi was entrusted with vital border security. Relying heavily on his uncle’s immense prestige, Qin Qi was notoriously arrogant, fierce, overbearing, and rigidly cruel in enforcing military regulations.
In 200 AD, after escaping Wang Zhi’s arson trap at Xingyang, Guan Yu escorted his two sisters-in-law (Lady Cam and Lady Mi) directly to the Yellow River ferry crossing to find boats to cross into northern territory to reunite with Liu Bei. Arriving at the docks, Guan Yu was intercepted by Qin Qi. Guan Yu politely explained his journey, but Qin Qi cold-heartedly refused passage without written authorization from Cao Cao, boasting that even if Guan Yu possessed wings he would not be allowed to cross. When Guan Yu asked if Qin Qi knew the fate of the pass commanders before him, Qin Qi arrogant boasted: ‘You have only slain a few nameless, incompetent fools! Do you dare compare them to me? If you have the skill, come forward and decapitate me!’
Qin Qi’s arrogance pushed Guan Yu past his limit. Charging forward on Red Hare, Guan Yu engaged Qin Qi in combat. In less than a single pass, Guan Yu swept his Green Dragon Crescent Blade, severing Qin Qi’s head into the Yellow River and ending his life instantly. Terrified by the execution, the ferry garrison surrendered all boats, allowing Guan Yu to safely escort the ladies across the river. However, word of Qin Qi’s death enraged his uncle Xiahou Dun, who pursued Guan Yu relentlessly to avenge his nephew, triggering a fierce duel between the two top generals at the border.
Historically, Qin Qi is entirely a literary creation of Luo Guanzhong, as Guan Yu’s historical departure from Xuchang was unimpeded by pass commanders or river blockades.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Qin Qi’s dramatic role is featured in Chapters 27 and 28. Serving as the final checkpoint commander at the Yellow River ferry, Qin Qi relies on his status as Xiahou Dun’s nephew to mock Guan Yu’s previous victories over pass commanders. Guan Yu charges him on Red Hare and decapitates him in less than a single bout, completing his legendary journey across five passes and six generals. His death acts as a major catalyst in Chapter 28, driving Xiahou Dun into a vengeful fury that leads to a duel between Xiahou Dun and Guan Yu.
