Biography & Historical Record
Cheng Gongying (died 225 AD) was a prominent strategist, general, and loyal advisor who served under the northwestern warlord Han Sui and later became a respected official of the state of Cao Wei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period. Hailing from Jincheng Commandery in Liang Province, he joined Han Sui in his youth and quickly distinguished himself as Han Sui’s chief military counselor and right-hand officer. Throughout decades of chaotic warfare across the northwestern frontier, Cheng Gongying offered unwavering, astute strategic advice, continually guiding Han Sui through complex rivalries with the Han central court, Ma Teng, and Ma Chao.
Following the defeat of the northwestern warlord coalition by Cao Cao at the Battle of Tong Pass in 211 AD, Han Sui fled west back to Liang Province. When Cao Cao’s general Xiahou Yuan launched campaigns into Liang Province in 214 AD and 215 AD, Han Sui’s forces suffered devastating defeats and scattered. Despite many officers defecting to Cao Cao, Cheng Gongying remained steadfastly loyal to Han Sui, protecting him in the remote western borderlands until Han Sui’s death in 215 AD. Only after Han Sui passed away did Cheng Gongying formally surrender to Xiahou Yuan. Impressed by his unshakeable fidelity to his deceased master, Cao Cao granted him an immediate audience, created him a Marquis of a Primary Village (關內侯), and appointed him as a Military Advisor. During the audience, when Cao Cao asked him why he stayed loyal to Han Sui for so long, Cheng Gongying wept openly and replied with profound dignity: ‘A subject’s duty is to serve his lord with total devotion. Though my former master met disaster, my heart remains true.’ Cao Cao deeply admired his nobility and treated him with high favor. Cheng Gongying continued to serve Cao Wei as General Who Pacifies the West, governing the turbulent Qiang and Di frontier regions alongside Zhang Ji until his peaceful death of natural causes in 225 AD.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cheng Gongying appears as a prudent, deeply loyal, and brave strategist serving Han Sui. Introduced in Chapter 58 during the campaign against Cao Cao at Tong Pass, Cheng Gongying serves as Han Sui’s chief advisor alongside Ma Chao’s forces. When Cao Cao employs Jia Xu’s alienation strategy (estrangement scheme) by sending Han Sui a letter filled with cross-outs and alterations, Cheng Gongying wisely advises caution, attempting to preserve unity between Han Sui and Ma Chao. Following the collapse of the alliance and Han Sui’s retreat west, Cheng Gongying continues to serve Han Sui with unwavering fidelity until Han Sui’s death. His ultimate submission to Cao Cao is highlighted as a model of righteous loyalty, earning him immense respect within the Cao Wei court.
