Biography & Historical Record
Fei Yao (died after 231 AD) was a military general serving the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period. He held significant positions along Cao Wei’s northwestern frontier, eventually rising to become General Who Establishes Might (確威將軍) and General Who Guards the Rear (後將軍). Throughout his career, Fei Yao was stationed in Yong and Liang provinces, actively participating in campaigns to suppress local rebellions and defend Wei’s borders against the incursions of Shu Han led by Zhuge Liang.
In 220 AD, local leaders Zhang Jin and Qu Yan sparked a major rebellion in Liang Province. Fei Yao collaborated with Inspector of Yong Province Zhang Ji and General Su Ze to launch a coordinated campaign that put down the insurgents, restoring order to the northwestern garrisons. During Shu Han’s Second Northern Expedition in 228 AD, when Zhuge Liang mounted a surprise assault against Chencang, Grand Commander Cao Zhen dispatched Fei Yao to lead reinforcements to bolster the defensive garrison under Hao Zhao, successfully helping to hold the fortress and forcing Shu forces to retreat due to dwindling provisions. In 231 AD, during Zhuge Liang’s Fourth Northern Expedition at the Battle of Mount Qi, Fei Yao served under Supreme Commander Sima Yi alongside Guo Huai, leading vanguard forces into combat against Shu Han’s armies.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Fei Yao appears in Chapter 97 and Chapter 98 as a prominent general under Cao Zhen’s command. When Zhuge Liang launches his Second Northern Expedition against Chencang, Cao Zhen dispatches Fei Yao to assist the defender Hao Zhao. During the campaign, Shu Han officer Jiang Wei devises a ploy, sending a fake letter of betrayal through a messenger named Liang You to trick Cao Zhen into an ambush. Cao Zhen enthusiastically accepts the offer, but Fei Yao wisely urges caution, pointing out that Zhuge Liang is exceedingly cunning and that Jiang Wei’s sudden defection might be a trap. Demonstrating genuine loyalty, Fei Yao offers to lead the vanguard in Cao Zhen’s place to test the offer. Approaching the designated location at Xie Valley, Fei Yao finds himself completely surrounded by Shu forces led by Jiang Wei. Realizing he has been trapped without any chance of escape or rescue, Fei Yao commits suicide on horseback by slitting his own throat to avoid capture, earning praise for his tragic heroism.
