Biography & Historical Record
Cheng Wu was a military advisor and officer serving the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period. He was the son of Cheng Yu, one of Cao Cao’s most brilliant and prominent chief strategists. Inheriting his father’s sharp tactical intellect, strategic foresight, and administrative capability, Cheng Wu succeeded to his father’s noble title as Marquis of Anfeng following Cheng Yu’s passing in 220 AD.
During the Northern Expeditions launched by Shu Han, Cheng Wu served as a key military advisor under the grand commander Xiahou Mao on the western front. In 228 AD, when Zhuge Liang led Shu’s First Northern Expedition into Wei territory, Xiahou Mao marched a massive army to Fengming Mountain to engage the legendary Shu general Zhao Yun. Recognizing Zhao Yun’s legendary martial prowess and aggressive battlefield momentum, Cheng Wu devised a cunning tactical ambush. He instructed Xiahou Mao to feign retreat, drawing Zhao Yun deep into a rugged valley, whereupon Wei forces encircled him from all sides. Although Zhao Yun fought valiantly, Cheng Wu’s tactical ring trapped the aged Shu hero until Zhang Bao and Guan Xing arrived with relief forces to rescue him.
Historically, Cheng Wu was respected at the Cao Wei court for maintaining his family’s legacy of high strategic counsel and loyal service to the throne.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cheng Wu is featured prominently in Chapter 92 during Shu Han’s First Northern Expedition. Serving as chief tactical advisor to Xiahou Mao at Fengming Mountain, Cheng Wu displays intellect reminiscent of his father Cheng Yu. Seeing the 70-year-old Zhao Yun slay Xiahou Mao’s vanguard generals Han De and his four sons in rapid succession, Cheng Wu advises against direct confrontation. He formulates a brilliant trap, using feigned retreats and hidden divisions to encircle Zhao Yun. The trap successfully pinches Zhao Yun’s detachment on a hill, forcing the veteran general to exclaim that his lifelong valor was finally outmatched by young intellect, before Shu reinforcements break through to save him.
