Biography and Historical Record of Zhou Ang
During the tumultuous decline of the Eastern Han dynasty leading into the Three Kingdoms era, a military commander named Zhou Ang served under the prominent northern warlord Yuan Shao. Hailing from Kuaiji Commandery alongside his notable brothers Zhou Xin and Zhou Yu, he became deeply entangled in the fierce proxy wars between rival warlords.
In 191 AD, Yuan Shao appointed him as the Inspector of Yuzhou and Administrator of Jiujiang. This appointment was a direct political maneuver designed to strip territorial control away from Sun Jian, who was actively campaigning against Dong Zhuo near Luoyang. Seizing the opportunity, Zhou Ang launched a surprise offensive to capture the regional stronghold at Yangcheng.
The resulting Battle of Yangcheng became a critical flashpoint. Sun Jian retreated from the frontline and counterattacked alongside his nephew Sun Ben. Additionally, Yuan Shu dispatched allied troops led by Gongsun Yue, the cousin of northern warlord Gongsun Zan, to drive off the northern forces. Although Gongsun Yue was killed by a stray arrow during the combat—an incident that ignited a bitter feud between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao—the combined southern assault eventually routed Zhou Ang, forcing him to abandon his position.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the officer is portrayed as a pivotal pawn in the escalating hostility between the Yuan half-brothers. The narrative highlights his sudden strike at Yangcheng, illustrating how early regional skirmishes fractured the grand coalition into decades of brutal civil warfare across China.
