Biography & Historical Record
Liang Xing was a powerful warlord and military commander who dominated the Guanzhong region (the pass region west of Tong Pass) during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was one of the ten prominent warlords—often collectively referred to as the ‘Ten Warlords of Guanzhong’ (Guanzhong Shibu)—who joined forces with Ma Chao and Han Sui to resist the encroaching influence of Cao Cao. Documented in Chen Shou’s official dynastic history Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi – Book of Wei, Biography of Ma Chao) and Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian, Liang Xing was a seasoned warrior who commanded a substantial independent army, playing a pivotal role in the desperate resistance against Cao Wei in the years following the Battle of Red Cliffs.
In 211 AD, when Cao Cao dispatched Zhong Yao and Xiahou Yuan to lead an army through the Guanzhong region under the guise of attacking Zhang Lu in Hanzhong, Liang Xing and the other Guanzhong warlords grew suspicious of Cao Cao’s true intentions to annex their independent territories. Sensing an imminent threat, Liang Xing joined Ma Chao, Han Sui, Li Kan, and others in a massive military coalition, pledging to overthrow Cao Cao’s dominance. At the Battle of Tong Pass, Liang Xing demonstrated great martial courage, leading his cavalry forces in fierce assaults against the Wei lines and successfully repelling early attempts to break the coalition’s defenses.
The coalition held firm until Cao Cao deployed the brilliant strategist Jia Xu, who utilized sophisticated psychological warfare to sow deep, intractable distrust between Ma Chao and Han Sui. As the coalition disintegrated into chaotic infighting, the warlords were picked off individually by Cao Cao’s veteran armies. Liang Xing initially fled to the mountainous regions, attempting to maintain an independent resistance against the Wei pacification forces. In 212 AD, however, the Wei general Xiahou Yuan launched a relentless pursuit of the remaining Guanzhong warlords. Liang Xing was eventually surrounded and killed in battle by Xiahou Yuan’s troops, marking the final destruction of the independent Guanzhong resistance.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Chapters 58 and 59 of Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liang Xing is portrayed as a loyal and fierce member of the Guanzhong coalition, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Ma Chao and Han Sui as they fight to avenge Ma Teng and defend their sovereign territories against Cao Cao.
The novel vividly dramatizes the intense military alliance in Chapter 58, as Liang Xing joins Ma Chao and Han Sui in a grand council of war following the execution of Ma Teng. Liang Xing swears a blood oath to aid Ma Chao in his punitive expedition against the usurper Cao Cao, contributing his forces to the coalition at Tong Pass. During the ensuing conflict, Liang Xing appears as a steadfast commander, orchestrating tactical cavalry maneuvers that severely harass the Wei army and contribute to the near-fatal ambush of Cao Cao during his flight across the Wei River, where Cao Cao is famously forced to ‘cut his beard and discard his robe’ to escape capture.
In Chapter 59, following the devastating breakdown of the coalition due to Jia Xu’s brilliant deception, the novel recounts the rapid collapse of the Guanzhong warlords. As Ma Chao and Han Sui turn their weapons against one another, Liang Xing and the other commanders are isolated. Luo Guanzhong illustrates Liang Xing’s desperate attempts to maintain his autonomy against Xiahou Yuan’s relentless hunt. The novel paints his end as a final, tragic testament to the pride and defiance of the Guanzhong warlords, who fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to the overwhelming institutional power and strategic ingenuity of the Cao Wei state.
