The Military Career of Liu Pan
Liu Pan was a valiant frontline commander during the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period. As a nephew of Liu Biao, the Governor of Jing Province, he became famous for commanding mobile cavalry units stationed along the borders of Changsha. Official chronicles such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms document his fierce incursions into Yuzhang alongside the veteran general Huang Zhong.
These persistent attacks inflicted significant pressure on the fledgling Jiangdong administration. In response, the warlord Sun Ce appointed the peerless warrior Taishi Ci as General Who Builds Fierceness, charging him with guarding the southern marches. Through disciplined defensive tactics, strategic fort construction, and tactical mastery, Taishi Ci successfully curbed the border raids, securing a lasting balance between the rival regional powers.
Literary Portrayal and Service Under Shu Han
In Chapter 53 of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liu Pan acts as an essential bridge between factions during the conquest of southern Jing Province. Following the death of Liu Biao and the chaos in Changsha, imperial warlord Liu Bei marched southward in 209 AD. After the rebel commander Wei Yan slew the tyrannical prefect Han Xuan, Huang Zhong submitted to Liu Bei on the condition that his former commander be honored.
Honoring this righteous request, Liu Bei sought out the respected kinsman and entrusted him with high civil authority. By formally recognizing his ancestral lineage and proven martial prowess, Liu Bei named Liu Pan as Administrator of Changsha. Under this official appointment, he effectively stabilized local governance, protected the vulnerable southern frontier, and preserved the political dignity of the Liu family within the newly emerging Shu Han realm.
