Biography & Historical Record
Lu Qian (dates of birth and death unknown), courtesy name Zike, was a distinguished military general and administrator who served the state of Cao Wei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period. Hailing from Juye, Yanzhou (modern-day Juye County, Shandong Province), Lu Qian was famed for his courage, administrative competence, and tactical foresight. When Cao Cao assumed control over Yanzhou, he recruited Lu Qian to manage local defense and civil administration, appointing him to govern his native region of Juye.
Throughout his service, Lu Qian proved exceptionally skilled at pacifying rebellions and managing military logistics. When Yuan Shao’s forces attempted to subvert Yanzhou during the Guandu campaign, Lu Qian led local militias to defend Juye, thwarting enemy incursions. Recognizing his leadership, Cao Cao promoted him to Administrator of Taishan Commandery (Thái sơn thái thú). In Taishan, Lu Qian commanded troops against regional bandits, rogue forces led by Zang Ba’s former associates, and Yellow Turban remnants. His strict yet fair governance restored prosperity to Taishan, and he successfully raised elite troops that supplied Cao Cao’s frontline armies. Following the founding of Cao Wei under Cao Pi, Lu Qian was elevated to General Who Asserts Might (Zhenwei Jiangjun) and created Marquis of Licheng. During Cao Rui’s reign, Lu Qian continued to serve with distinction along Wei’s frontiers until his peaceful death, whereupon his noble title was inherited by his son Lu Kang.
