Biography & Historical Record of Sun Shao (Wu)
Sun Shao (Wu) (163–225), courtesy name Changxu, was a prominent statesman of Eastern Wu during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Originally hailing from Beihai Commandery, he began his civil career serving under the scholar-official Kong Rong before migrating south to escape northern instability. He accompanied Liu Yao to Jiangnan and subsequently joined Sun Ce and Sun Quan’s burgeoning administration.
Admired for his modesty, diligence, and extensive administrative experience, Sun Shao quickly earned the trust of Sun Quan. In 222 AD, upon declaring the independence of Eastern Wu, Sun Quan appointed him as the state’s inaugural Chancellor (Chengxiang). Upon establishing his imperial regime, Sun Quan relied heavily on Sun Shao (Wu) to organize civil governance and enact legal systems. He led the state bureaucracy with distinction until his death in 225 AD, when Gu Yong succeeded him.
