Biography & Historical Record of Xiang Lang
Xiang Lang (courtesy name Juda) was an esteemed scholar, bibliophile, and civil official from Yicheng in Xiangyang during the late Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms era. During his formative years, he studied classical Confucian philosophy under the renowned scholar Sima Hui alongside luminaries like Pang Tong and Xu Shu. He commenced his public career serving as Chief of Linju under Jing Province governor Liu Biao. Following Liu Biao’s death and Cao Cao’s southern campaign in 208 AD, he cast his lot with Liu Bei, accompanying the warlord westward into Shu.
Civil Governance and Literary Contributions
Throughout his tenure in the Shu Han administration, the official governed multiple crucial commanderies, including Zigui, Fangling, and Baxi, earning a stellar reputation for fair civil governance. When Chancellor Zhuge Liang launched the Northern Expeditions, he appointed the veteran administrator as Chief Clerk to oversee army logistics and camp administration. Although Xiang Lang was temporarily stripped of rank after failing to report the flight of his friend Ma Su following the disaster at Jieting, he spent his retirement immersing himself in scholarly pursuits.
He amassed one of the largest private collections of ancient texts in southwestern China, tirelessly collating and correcting classical manuscripts until his death at age eighty-one. Following Zhuge Liang’s death, Emperor Liu Shan reinstated the veteran scholar, elevating him to General of the Left and later Grand Tutor.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
