Biography & Historical Record
Xiao Jian was a regional official and military leader who operated in Xu Province during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Originating from Donghai Commandery (Donghai Jun), Xiao Jian served as the Chancellor/Grand Administrator of Langya (Langya Xiang). Rather than maintaining his administrative headquarters at the regional capital, Xiao Jian fortified his base at Ju County (Ju Xian, present-day Rizhao City, Shandong Province). Ju County was a heavily fortified military position boasting well-supplied granaries, immense wealth, and a formidable garrison of elite regional troops.
When Lu Bu seized control of Xu Province from Liu Bei, Xiao Jian initially adopted an isolated and independent stance, sealing the gates of Ju County and refusing to submit to or correspond with Lu Bu. To persuade Xiao Jian to align with him, Lu Bu sent a sharp, persuasive letter to Ju County, arguing: ‘Everyone in the world desires to attack Ju County because of its abundant wealth and granaries… Previously, when Dong Zhuo was tyrannical, I slew him. Now, when the Yellow Turban rebels rampage, I defeat them. My military prestige shakes the empire, yet you have not sent a single message of greeting. However, both you and I originate from Donghai Commandery and live in close proximity; we should be assisting each other rather than remaining hostile.’
Upon reading Lu Bu’s letter, Xiao Jian grew intimidated by Lu Bu’s fearsome reputation. He immediately altered his stance, dispatching an official envoy to present Lu Bu with five fine warhorses and 140 head of cattle to pledge allegiance, formally submitting Langya under Lu Bu’s sphere of influence.
However, Xiao Jian’s alliance with Lu Bu was short-lived. Zang Ba, a leader of the Mount Tai bandits, launched a sudden night assault against Ju County, overwhelming Xiao Jian’s defenses and plundering all the treasure, livestock, and grain stores from the city. Furious upon learning that his new tributary was attacked and stripped of his tribute, Lu Bu personally led a punitive force against Zang Ba to reclaim the plunder, despite warnings from his chief strategist Chen Gong against provoking the Mount Tai coalition. Zang Ba mounted a tenacious defense, forcing Lu Bu to withdraw back to Xiapi. Following the total plunder and fall of Ju County, Xiao Jian lost his entire power base and fades completely from historical records.
