Biography & Historical Record
Xu Xi was a military general who served under both Cao Cao and Lu Bu during the turbulent late Eastern Han dynasty. Originally an officer under Cao Cao’s administration in Yan Province, Xu Xi was stationed in local commanderies alongside his close comrade Mao Hui. In 194 AD, taking advantage of Cao Cao’s expeditionary campaign against Tao Qian in Xu Province to avenge his father Cao Song, Chen Gong and Zhang Miao instigated a major rebellion across Yan Province and invited Lu Bu to assume governorship over the region. Catching the wave of provincial defections, Xu Xi and Mao Hui betrayed Cao Cao, surrendering their local garrison forces to join Lu Bu’s warlord coalition.
By 195 AD, Cao Cao returned to launch a ferocious counter-offensive, systematically defeating Lu Bu’s forces and fully pacifying Yan Province. Fearing execution for high treason if captured by Cao Cao, Xu Xi and Mao Hui fled to the Taishan mountain region to seek refuge under Zang Ba, a powerful independent Mount Tai bandit leader and semi-autonomous ally of Lu Bu.
In 199 AD, following Lu Bu’s defeat and execution at the Siege of Xiapi, Zang Ba surrendered his Mount Tai forces to Cao Cao. Cao Cao treated Zang Ba with great generosity, bestowing high titles upon him. However, holding a deep grudge against the treason of his former officers, Cao Cao ordered Liu Bei (who was then accompanying Cao Cao’s army) to deliver a stern demand to Zang Ba to execute Xu Xi and Mao Hui and bring their severed heads to the capital. Zang Ba courageously refused, telling Liu Bei: ‘The reason I am able to stand tall in this world is that I never betray my friends for personal gain. I owe my rebirth to Cao Cao and dare not disobey his command, but a great leader should govern with righteousness. I request that you, General Liu, speak on my behalf.’
When Liu Bei relayed Zang Ba’s exact words back to Cao Cao, Cao Cao was not angered. Instead, he praised Zang Ba for possessing the lofty moral righteousness of ancient heroes. Moved by Zang Ba’s integrity, Cao Cao declared a full amnesty for Xu Xi and Mao Hui, sparing their lives and subsequently appointing both men as Grand Administrators under the Cao Wei imperial government.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xu Xi’s story aligns with the chaotic provincial struggles in Chapters 11 and 19. Initially serving Cao Cao in Yan Province, Xu Xi joins the widespread revolt led by Chen Gong and Zhang Miao in Chapter 11, defecting to Lu Bu. Following Lu Bu’s downfall at Xiapi in Chapter 19, Xu Xi and Mao Hui flee to Langya to seek sanctuary with Zang Ba. When Cao Cao demands their severed heads, Zang Ba’s unyielding defense of his comrades sways Cao Cao to grant a full pardon, showcasing Cao Cao’s strategic magnanimity and respect for martial honor.
