Biography & Historical Record
Xu Zhi was a military officer who served the state of Cao Wei during the late Three Kingdoms period. He served under Sima Zhao as a general during the ongoing border conflicts and Northern Expeditions against Shu Han along the western frontier.
In historical records, Xu Zhi participated in defending Wei’s western territories against Shu Han’s counter-offensives led by Jiang Wei. In 254 AD, when the Shu general Jiang Wei launched an invasion into Longxi Commandery targeting Didao, Xu Zhi was dispatched as part of the vanguard force under General Who Guards the West, Guo Huai, and Inspector of Yongzhou, Chen Tai. During the heavy fighting in Longxi, Xu Zhi served bravely in frontline engagements against the invading Shu divisions. Historically, he died in battle during the intense clashes in Longxi in 254 AD.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xu Zhi’s character arc is featured prominently in Chapter 109 as an elite warrior of immense physical strength. Standing over eight feet tall with broad shoulders, Xu Zhi wields a massive sixty-pound iron mace (iron club) and rides a swift steed. Recommended by Sima Zhao to reinforce the western frontier, Xu Zhi is appointed Vanguard Commander under Guo Huai to oppose Jiang Wei’s invasion at Mount Longxi. During his first duel, Xu Zhi faces the Shu general Liao Hua; after just a few passes, Liao Hua feigns defeat and retreats. Xu Zhi then duels Zhang Ni, whom he severely wounds with his heavy mace before Shu reinforcements intervene. However, Jiang Wei devises a night ambush in a narrow canyon. Xu Zhi’s force is cut off and surrounded; as he desperately tries to break through the encirclement, he is ambushed and slain by the Shu general Liao Hua.
