Biography & Historical Record
Huang Gai (黄盖, Hoàng Cái), courtesy name Gongfu (公覆, Công Phúc), was the iron-whip veteran of the Sun house—serving Sun Jian (孙坚, Tôn Kiên), Sun Ce (孙策, Tôn Sách), and Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền) from the anti-Dong Zhuo wars through Red Cliffs. A native of Quanling in Lingling, he is the novel’s face of the “bitter flesh stratagem” (苦肉计): enduring a public beating so Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) will believe his false defection, then leading fire ships into the locked northern fleet.
Historically he likewise proposed fire against Cao Cao’s ships and was wounded in the fighting; the novel amplifies the deception plot with Kan Ze (阚泽, Khản Trạch) and Zhou Yu (周瑜, Chu Du). Before Red Cliffs he already shines in Chapters 5–7—dueling Cai Mao (蔡瑁, Sái Mạo) and capturing Huang Zu (黄祖, Hoàng Tổ).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Huang Gai’s arc runs from coalition cavalry/navy under Sun Jian to the climax at Chibi: he volunteers the self-injury ruse (Ch. 46–49), coordinates with Kan Ze’s forged surrender letter, and drives burning vessels into Cao Cao’s chain-linked fleet—paying for victory with grievous wounds. He is Wu’s emblem of old loyalty willing to bleed for a stratagem.
