Biography & Historical Record
Wang Zhong (王忠, Vương Trung) (died 242 AD) was a military officer who served Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) and later Cao Wei. A native of Xiaji in Fufeng Commandery, he began as a minor local official, then fled east with followers after surviving the Guanzhong famine during the chaos of Li Jue (李傕, Lý Thôi) and Guo Si (郭汜, Quách Dĩ). Cao Cao enrolled him as a troop commander.
In 199 AD, after the death of Che Zhou (车胄, Xa Trụ), Cao Cao sent Wang Zhong with Liu Dai (刘岱, Lưu Đại) against Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) in Xu Province. The expedition failed at Xiaopei; Liu Bei mocked them, saying a hundred such generals could not threaten him. Cao Cao nonetheless spared both officers. Under Cao Pi (曹丕, Tào Phi), Wang Zhong rose to titles including Marquis of Light Cavalry and General Who Calms the South; court jests still recalled his famine survival. He died in 242 AD under Cao Fang (曹芳, Tào Phương).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Chapter 22, Wang Zhong appears with Liu Dai under Cao Cao’s banners against Liu Bei in Xuzhou. Outside the city, Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) feigns retreat, then captures Wang Zhong alive. Liu Bei treats him courteously and releases him to show benevolence. Cao Cao threatens execution until Kong Rong (孔融, Khổng Dung) intercedes — a brief but vivid illustration of Cao Cao’s early failed probes against Liu Bei before Guandu.
