The Rise and Fall of Ze Rong
Ze Rong was a notorious military figure who operated during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the emerging Three Kingdoms era. While serving under Governor Tao Qian, he supervised grain transport across Pengcheng and Xiapi. Rather than fulfilling his duties faithfully, he embezzled provincial revenues to construct opulent temples adorned with bronze and gold-plated statues, securing an infamous place in the history of Buddhism in China.
Following Cao Cao’s devastating campaigns in Xu Province, he fled south with thousands of followers. Despite projecting an aura of religious piety, his journey became a trail of deceit and slaughter. He repeatedly accepted hospitality from regional officials only to assassinate them and plunder their domains.
Portrayal in Three Kingdoms Lore
In historical records and classic literature, Ze Rong is remembered as an opportunist who weaponized religious devotion to mask greed and lawlessness. His destructive career ended when Liu Yao launched a punitive counteroffensive, forcing him to flee into the mountains where vengeful locals killed him in 195 AD.
