Biography & Historical Record
Gongsun Yue (公孙越, Công Tôn Việt) (?–191) was a younger cousin of the You Province warlord Gongsun Zan (公孙瓒, Công Tôn Toản) in Chen Shou’s histories, and is presented in Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms as Gongsun Zan’s younger half-brother. His death in 191 AD became the immediate casus belli for Gongsun Zan’s open war against Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu)—the northern rivalry that runs through Jieqiao and ultimately destroys the Gongsun regime.
Historically, when Emperor Xian (献帝, Hiến Đế)’s envoy politics and the struggle against Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác) pulled northern lords into shifting alliances, Gongsun Zan sent Gongsun Yue south with about one thousand men and supplies to assist Yuan Shu (袁术, Viên Thuật). At Yangcheng, Gongsun Yue fought beside Sun Jian (孙坚, Tôn Kiên) against Yuan Shao’s officers (Zhou Ang / Zhou Yu Renming in the source tradition). The engagement went well for Yuan Shu’s side, but Gongsun Yue was struck by a stray arrow and died of the wound. Gongsun Zan blamed Yuan Shao and declared war.
The novel rearranges the story for personal betrayal. After talks about dividing Ji Province, Gongsun Zan sends Gongsun Yue as envoy to Yuan Shao. Yuan Shao receives him courteously and asks him to bring Gongsun Zan for a face-to-face settlement. On the road home, assassins claiming to be Dong Zhuo’s bodyguards kill only Gongsun Yue; the escort escapes and reports the ambush. Gongsun Zan concludes Yuan Shao ordered the murder and raises arms—turning a battlefield casualty into a staged assassination while keeping the same political consequence.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 7 (Yuan Shao Fights Gongsun Zan at the Pan River; Sun Jian Crosses the River to Attack Liu Biao): Gongsun Yue (公孙越, Công Tôn Việt) appears as Gongsun Zan’s close kinsman and envoy. After the two northern lords quarrel over Ji Province, he rides to Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu)’s camp, is treated with courtesy, and is told to fetch Gongsun Zan for talks. Returning, he is ambushed and killed by men posing as Dong Zhuo’s guards. Survivors carry the news; Gongsun Zan (公孙瓒, Công Tôn Toản) declares Yuan Shao the murderer and opens the war that includes the Pan River / Jieqiao fighting. The historical stray-arrow death at Yangcheng while aiding Yuan Shu and Sun Jian is replaced by this road assassination so the feud feels personal and deliberate.
Gongsun Yue barely speaks as a strategist; his narrative weight is catalytic. Alive, he is the trusted rider Gongsun Zan sends into Yuan politics; dead, he is the pretext that locks north China into years of Gongsun–Yuan war.
